Scope
The opportunity is to develop insurance and finance products around a shared record of vessel, operator and trip performance. NMEA 2000 telemetry contributes observations about location, movement, propulsion, electrical systems and utilization. Club records, claims, maintenance, payments, contracts and resale transactions supply the context needed to turn those observations into financial decisions.
The near-term business case is stronger monitoring, loss prevention and servicing. Actuarially supported rating variables, telemetry adjusted credit terms and a scalable vessel investment class require credible claims, credit and disposition experience. The proposed platform creates the evidence base for those later products.
Insurance and Financial Product Portfolio
Fleet Hull and Equipment
- Club or fleet owner; physical damage to identified vessels
- Condition alerts, location, utilization and claims context
Member Operation Liability
- Club program extending appropriate protection to authorized operators
- Trip exposure, contextual behavior, incident reconstruction
Secured Vessel Loan
- Club or owner; lender receives interest and collateral rights
- Collateral monitoring and servicing triggers
Commercial Vessel Lease
- Club pays for defined use; lessor owns asset and residual
- Usage bands, service alerts and return condition
Fleet Asset Investment
- Investors fund a diversified vessel portfolio
- Asset-level reporting, reserves and residual validation
One Data Foundation (Marine Intelligence Platform)
Member and Trip
- Link operator authorization, training, vessel, time, route, conditions, incidents and claims. Club systems must establish member identity; NMEA messages do not.
Vessel and Equipment
- Link hull identity, title, engines, devices, configuration, insured value, maintenance and independent appraisal.
Contract and Cash Flow
- Link insurance terms, loan or lease obligations, payments, repairs, reserves and net sale proceeds to the same vessel history.
Core NMEA Fields
- Position; course and speed; heading; depth; engine speed; engine status, hours, temperatures and pressures; battery status; wind. Availability depends on installed devices and verified message definitions.
Insurance Products
Fleet Property
- Start with vessel value, type, territory, season, deductibles and catastrophe exposure. Test whether utilization and condition improve estimates of damage frequency, severity and prevention opportunities.
Member Liability
- Measure trips and operating hours by authorized operator and vessel. Derive contextual events from speed, position, depth and conditions; a raw speed reading alone does not establish unsafe conduct.
Product Language
- Define covered vessels, authorized operators, permitted use and territory, valuation, limits, deductibles, maintenance, claims duties and telemetry permissions. Sensor failure or an unverified alert should not automatically void coverage.
Actuarial
- Develop prospective loss and expense indications by coverage; adjust for loss development, trend, catastrophe, reinsurance and capital. Blend limited shared access experience with relevant external experience using credibility procedures. Only validated, stable and permitted variables advance to filed rating factors.
Vessel Finance Products
Traditional Loans
- Underwrite borrower repayment capacity first, then title, independent collateral value, insurance and recovery costs. Use telemetry to prompt inspection and reduce avoidable collateral deterioration; it does not replace cash flow analysis.
Innovative Leases
- Price capital recovery, funding, servicing, insurance, expected losses and residual risk. Test fixed, seasonal, availability and usage band terms with explicit measurement, data gap and return condition rules. Lease characterization follows contractual substance.
Investable Fleet Assets
- An asset-owning entity contracts vessels to clubs, funds reserves and debt service, and distributes remaining cash under defined investor rights. Diversify by club, geography, model and vintage. Report recurring cash yield separately from sale proceeds and return of capital.
Tokenization
- Treat a token as a possible recordkeeping or distribution format after conventional asset, governance and investor rights are established. Securities obligations depend on the instrument and offering, regardless of format.
Shared-Access Boating Operating Model Use Case Validation
Data and Rights
- Identified vessels and devices; lawful access; timestamp, quality and missing data controls
- Fund limited integration and validation
Pilot Operations
- Executed club contracts; collected payments; maintenance, incidents and claims linked to trips
- Continue, revise or stop product design
Risk Validation
- Alert usefulness, claims outcomes, repairs and residual predictions compared with actuals
- Approve narrow underwriting or contract changes
Portfolio Readiness
- Repeatable multi-club economics, independent values, perfected interests, reserves and stress tests
- Commit scalable asset capital
Scale
- Realized credit, insurance and resale experience supports model assumptions
- Expand distribution and consider capital-market structures
Validation Thresholds
Distribution
- Club willingness to adopt the insurance and financing terms, data access and operational interventions.
Unit Economics
- Premium and lease collections; losses, repairs, downtime, servicing costs, financing cost and actual residual values by vessel.
Control
- Ownership and lien records, insurance fit for shared access, contracts, data rights, claims procedures and related-party arrangements.
Evidence
- Whether telemetry improves decisions beyond conventional variables, measured out of sample and across clubs and vessel vintages.
The first investment milestone is an auditable, claims and cash flow linked fleet pilot. The scale decision follows demonstrated collections, manageable losses and repair costs, and net disposition proceeds consistent with conservative underwriting.
